Symptoms of this cancer may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleura are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen.
Other symptoms of the peritoneal type may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.
These may be caused by this disease or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to see a doctor about any of these symptoms. Only a doctor with the proper medical equipment and training can make an accurate diagnosis.
If you have been exposed to asbestos and want to be examined, do not hesitate. The sooner a proper diagnosis is made, the better your chances are of fighting the disease. If you are found to have the disease, do not despair. Clinical research continues to try to find new, more potent ways to fight this type of cancer. There are also many support groups to help you and your family cope with the wide range of emotions you will be facing.
You may even qualify for a clinical trial of new medications being developed to fight this cancer. Locations of clinical trials can be found by contacting the National Institute of Health. Your doctor may also know of current trials being conducted.
